These are choice woodland perennials which are grown for their foliage effect as well as the small flowers and blue fruits. Foliage rises in mid spring, completely folded up, it slowly unwraps to form a canopy of leaves which can be up to 30 cms wide or so. These have several points around the perimeter and the leaf petiole joins in the centre of the leaf, colour is lush apple-green. Flowering shoots have two leaves only and these are held on rigid stems to 80 cms or so. flowers are numerous, white and borne in an umbrella-like cyme, these are followed by berries which turn blue.
