Looks absolutely nothing like the other Mukdenias listed here! Often confused with Oresitrophe rupifraga which has similar foliage but pale pink flowers.
A choice herbaceous woodland perennial reaching up to 20 cms high or thereabouts when in flower. It is a hardy perennial producing generally thickened stumpy rhizomes from which rise both leaves and flowers. Foliage is deep green and rounded rather like a Bergenia but the edges are serrated. Nothing like an Acanthus which is what you may think looking at the name. The name actually refers to the serrations to the leaf edges. Flowers are held on rigid stout stems which bear panicles of numerous small creamy-white flowers. Good red autumn colour.
