A choice Japanese woodland perennial, growing from a woody rootstock and rising to around 90 cms high with arching stems. The foliage is mid green and deeply serrated, palmate in shape with visible veining, larger leaves at the bottom of the stems and gradually getting smaller towards the top. Petioles are mahogany red-brown and the stems are a deep brownish colour. The flowers are borne on the upper parts of the stems, in clusters of two or three on stems held opposite each other up the main stem. Colour is rich yellow and the flower is like a shuttlecock with thick waxy-textured petals.
