A tidy clump forming perennial rising from underground rhizomes in early spring. The foliage is pinnate and pale green in colour, each leaflet is mildly serrate. The flowers are borne on short stems and are held just above the foliage. Each has four petals and generally cup-shaped, being bright yellow in colour. Sometimes listed as Hylomecon vernalis.
