A herbaceous perennial grown mainly for the foliage effect, it does however have attractive flowers. Foliage emerges in early spring from swollen roots. They unfurl and at this point the foliage is at its best. Colour is a very attractive bluish grey, being more or less pointed and lanceolate. Flowers are borne in mid summer on rigid stems, each stems carries numerous flowers of a tubular shape. Colour is lavender-purple and these are followed by green seed pods.
