This species is Deciduous but the older growth has attractive autumn colours before the new growth rises in early spring shortly after which, the flowers emerge. Leaves are flushed strong reddish-bronze when young but colour up to a fresh green with a strong red margin when mature and being loosely heart shaped . Flowers are borne in short racemes, are a red and creamy lemon yellow in colour, and hang pendulously from upright stems. Differs from the species in that the flower is maybe slightly broader in the petal.
