A herbaceous rhizomatous perennial with rigid wiry stems carrying lance shaped pale green leaves from mid spring onwards. Each leaflet has a downy coating to the lower surface. Flowers are held in clusters of up to 3, pale yellowish white or creamy-green, and are pendulous, hanging from wiry stems from the leaf axils. Occasionally, black or red fruits follow.
