This has to be the largest flower of the genus even larger than A. griffithii! As the species but larger in all it's parts, the foliage is the first to emerge in early summer, being wrapped around the flower. Foliage on this species is trifoliate, usually one stem per bulb but occasionally two, each leaflet has a broad side and a narrow one with the whole leaflet edged rich red. Veins are quite visible and the whole leaf hangs pendulously like three fingers up to 35 cms long each - very attractive. Flowers are deep red, open mouthed with a deep red spadix and a spadix appendage which can reach up to a metre long, this usually comes out draped over the foliage. A must for the collection.
