A very variable long established perennial for the rock garden. Leaves rise just after the flowers in spring on this hybrid. They are very deeply indented and at first appearance are completely wooly but later expand to reveal their true form - finely serrated. Flowers are bell like but held erect with a furry covering. Flower colour is variable and most have a frilled edge. This species can take a year or two to settle down before they produce the characteristic frilled flwers.
