Rare woodland species from Eastern China with a very attractive form. Rigid stems rise from the ground in early spring, this itself being an attraction. The shoots are deep rich green and hold whorls of narrow lanceolate leaves, although the lower leaves may be opposite. The flowers are borne in the leaf axils on the upper leaf whorls later in the season, colour is rich pink. They are held in the leaf axils but hang pendulously in a ring around the stem. Bright red berries follow.
