A stranger in the genus, this species is very much a dwarf, reaching only 3 cms high or so. The flowers on this species tend to emerge first, these are deep pink-purple in colour and aroung 1 cm wide, cup shaped and with no obvious scent or very feintly so. The foliage emerges later, this is pale green in whorls and one or two whorls per stem. A fairly vigorous species but far from invasive. We would reccomend this species for a shadier area of a rock garden or woodland aspect. Easy to grow. Black fruit occasionally follows the flower when the conditions are right.
