A herbaceous alpine plant which provides a profusion of flowers in summer. The leaves are the first to emerge in mid spring, these are much divided and greyish green in colour arranged in a rounded compressed whorl type shape, growing directly from the rhizome which grows beneath the soil surface. The flowers are borne after the first leaves have opened, these are a little variable but generally bluish-violet in colour, occasionally deep pinkish. The flowers are broadly trumpet shaped with a wide mouth, strong veining is evident with these being much deeper in colour.
