A rarely offered woodland perennial which is usually evergreen throughout the year. The leaves quickly grow to make a ground hugging, weed suppressing mat. Each leaf is edged with fine hairs and the surface of each is mottled with brown, a glossy upper surface adds to the interest. The whole plant spreads by means of surface or shallowly buried rhizomes which make it easy to multiply. The flowers are quite small but very interesting, the petals recurving back sharply. These last for many weeks and the stem persists long after the flowers have died.
