A herbaceous rhizomatous perennial forming solid clumps of erect rigid stems carrying both leaves and flowers. The leaves on this plant are broadly lanceolate, pale green with a strongly veined upper surface. The lower surface is lightly downy. This often takes on a golden-yellow colouration in early autumn. Flowers are borne at the stem tips and appear as plumes of numerous creamy-white flowers, occasionally followed by rich red fruits in autumn.

 Formerly Smilacina racemosa.
