An unusual herbaceous perennial growing from thickened taproot-like growths in early spring. Foliage on this species is rather fleshy and fern-like in appearance. Each has a central stem and many smaller leaflets, several leaves per growth but no stem. Similar in appearance to I. m. grandiflora. The flowers are borne on their own stem which rises directly from the ground, usually central to the rest of the plant. Each stem rises to around 45cms high and holds up to 3 flowers each. The flowers are very large for the rest of the plant at up to 5cm wide or more, colour is pale pink. Attractive black/green seed pod follow.
