An exceptional species and very easy to grow in the garden. Stems rise from flattened bulbs in early spring and carry numerous lance-shaped glossy deep-green leaves with prominent veins. Flowers are obviously the main attraction here. These are borne in multiples at the stem tips with as many as 20 flowers opening in rapid succession until all are open. Flower colour is deep purple although this appears more like black making a spectacular sight and a talking point in any garden. Will slowly spread given time.
