A herbaceous rhizomatous perennial with rigid wiry reddish stems carrying broadly lance shaped pale green leaves with prominent veining from mid spring onwards. Flowers are held in clusters of up to 6, pale yellowish white or creamy-white, and are pendulous and rather tubular to around 2 cms long hanging on their wiry pedicels from the leaf axils. Orange fruits usually follow.
