A rhizomatous perennial forming solid clumps of erect rigid stems carrying both evergreen leaves and flowers. The leaves on this plant are broadly lanceolate, pale green with a strongly veined upper surface, with occasional variegation. Flowers are borne at leaf petiole bases, occasionally followed by rich red fruits in autumn.
