A fully hardy species from Siberia where it makes solitary open clumps in open woodland. Flower buds arise at the same time as the foliage held just below and only open after the foliage has unfurled. Each leaf is strongly serrated, being deep sage green in colour. Flowers are the main attraction with each having broad petals and open wide like a daisy. This plant spreads by stolons rather like wood anemones and will fill a space fairly quickly although it's not invasive.
