The leaves are rather large at up to 20 cms wide and long, each with visible veining.    The flowers on this impressive species are a deep red colour and tend to hang down below the foliage. This can hide the flower a little but regular division will allow them to be seen. The whole flower can easily reach up to 10 cms wide, as it does here in our garden every year. Please note that in our experience this species can often grow its first flower or two as coppery orange tones, this is normal and we believe it is a reaction to root disturbance and will return to yellow once established. Very closely related to Trilliums and included in the same family, they grow from similar underground rhizomes, although this one is certainly the largest. The foliage rises early in the season, the photograph was taken at Chelsea Flower show 2001 in May, with one leaf per growth unlike trilliums which can produce up to four. Each leaf is pale green and composed of numerous radiating leaflets, the centre of which has a short stem holding the flower bud.  The flower is held on a short stem, only one flower is produced per growth but this is all that is required. Colour is white, each flower has a similar composition to the foliage in that it is made up of numerous petals radiating from the centre. The flower lasts for many weeks although the stamens and stigma only last for around one week.\u003cbr\u003e  Young plants needing a few years to flower. Leaves are variably marbled and borne on stems often reddish in colour. Each is up to 10 cms long and almost wide, the marbling being most prominent at leaf emergence and fading as the flower fades. We believe ours may be a hybrid as the petals are taller than the plant in the picture!    Flowers are obviously sessile, rather short petalled and variably reddish-purple in colour, occasionally greenish. A species which is much more attractive than its description. This is the real species, many suppliers will offer sessile but supply cuneatum! The foliage is rather small - up to 7 cms long and 5 cms wide. Each leaflet is held in threes on top of 25 cm stems, occasionally to 30 cms if the soil is fertile. This species does not really make large clumps, it will however spread more rapidly making a carpet of single stems from its slender rhizomes.    Flowers are very different from any other Trillium. Petals are narrow and usually deep red, occasionally yellow but we don't have one this colour - if you have we would be very interested! The petals tend to lay horizontally towards the leaf surface and have a conspicuous twist like a corkskrew. Satmens are also worth mentioning as they are a deep red and enlarged, erect adding to the interest of the flower.    Sorry for the poor picture quality! The two impressive leaves are the first parts of the plant to become noticeable being up to 60 cms high. Both leaves are composed of three large leaflets which are deeply veined and up to 20 cms long each, these are finely edged red.    The flowers are absolutely stunning, the spathe unfurls at approximately the same time as the leaves and can be up to 40 cms tall on established clumps. The colour is green and deep red, with the veins appearing white and forming a very conspicuous network. A large hood drops down over the mouth of the flower and flares wide to around 10 cms wide.
